OAKWOOD HOA DRAINAGE DITCH REPAIR & EROSION CONTROL

Winter Haven, Florida | Completed February 2022

AAA Top Quality Asphalt was brought in to perform a drainage ditch repair and erosion-control project for Oakwood HOA in Winter Haven, Florida, working in coordination with Carter Kaye Engineering and Polk County.

This project was a combination of private HOA and County-related drainage work involving approximately 365 linear feet of drainage ditch that had experienced significant erosion and slope undermining caused by water flow.

The project presented several unique challenges, including working within a live drainage ditch, limited access between properties, and an existing barbed-wire fence separating the HOA property from the adjacent property needed to access and repair the affected slope.

WORKING IN A LIVE DRAINAGE SYSTEM

Because the work involved an active drainage ditch, timing was critical.

AAA scheduled the project for February during the dry season in Winter Haven, allowing the crew to work within the drainage area under more favorable conditions and helping minimize the impact of active water flow during construction.

The existing water flow had undermined portions of the ditch slope, particularly along the WH Oaks side, requiring the damaged slope to be rebuilt and properly graded.

AAA imported fill dirt as needed and used a combination of a skid steer, mini excavator, and experienced field labor to reconstruct and regrade approximately 365 linear feet of ditch line.

UNIQUE ACCESS & SITE CONDITIONS

One of the biggest challenges on this project was access.

The drainage ditch ran parallel to the Oakwood HOA property, but the crew could not simply bring equipment directly through the HOA area. AAA had to access the work from the adjacent property running parallel to the HOA and work across the existing barbed-wire fence to reach the damaged ditch slope.

This required careful equipment positioning and experienced operators to perform the excavation, grading, fill placement, and erosion-control work while working within a confined area and around existing property conditions.

The restricted access made proper planning and coordination especially important throughout the project.

SLOPE RECONSTRUCTION & EROSION CONTROL

Once the undermined areas were excavated and rebuilt with fill material, AAA re-graded the ditch slope to restore the proper profile.

To provide additional protection against future erosion, AAA installed VMAX C350 Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM) along the WH Oaks side of the repaired slope.

The TRM was installed with stacked sod placed over the reinforcement mat, creating a stabilized vegetated surface designed to help protect the reconstructed slope from erosion.

Additional sod was installed on the repaired ditch slopes as needed to complete the restoration.

RESTORING THE ACCESS AREA

Because the project required heavy equipment to travel through the existing alleyway, AAA also restored areas affected by construction activities.

The alleyway was re-sodded as needed where access disturbed the existing turf.

Traffic control measures, including cones and barricades, were used within the designated project area to clearly identify the work zone and help maintain a safe working environment.

COORDINATION & SELF-PERFORMED CONSTRUCTION

AAA worked alongside Oakwood HOA, Carter Kaye Engineering, and Polk County to coordinate the work and complete the required drainage repairs.

AAA self-performed the field construction using its own equipment and experienced crews, including:

  • Mini excavator
  • Skid steer
  • Ditch excavation and grading
  • Imported fill dirt
  • Slope reconstruction
  • VMAX C350 Turf Reinforcement Mat
  • Stacked sod installation
  • Ditch and slope restoration
  • Alleyway sod replacement
  • Hand labor and finishing work
  • Work-zone traffic control

ENGINEERING, ACCESS & FIELD EXECUTION

The Oakwood HOA drainage project demonstrates AAA Top Quality Asphalt’s ability to take on challenging site and drainage projects where access, water, existing property conditions, and erosion all must be considered before work can begin.

By scheduling the work during the February dry season, coordinating with the HOA, engineering firm, and Polk County, and utilizing experienced operators and specialized equipment, AAA was able to access and rebuild the damaged drainage slope while working within a difficult and confined site.

From regrading and rebuilding the undermined slope to installing turf reinforcement and restoring the surrounding property, AAA managed the field operations from start to finish and returned the area to a stabilized, restored condition.
